He will provide an overview of the time that jazz reigned supreme in Detroit, with over 50 clubs and other venues in the Paradise Valley area, and then he will provide insight into how urban renewal efforts and freeway construction led to the destruction of important cultural, neighborhood, and economic resources in this same area. Rod will share both historical photos as well has is own photos of Detroit and jazz artists. He will also share his current research project that seeks to document Black-owned businesses in Paradise Valley and Black Bottom during Detroit’s population peak in the 1950s.
